‘WIZZ AIR CABIN CREW FORCED TO RESIGN.’

It has been reported by FPU Romania that one of it’s members, a Wizz Air cabin attendant, has been reprimanded and forced to resign by the base manager for refusing to extend a flight duty period (FDP) under Commanders’ discretion on August 1st. According to FPU Romania this led to the crew being stranded at the airport for nearly nine (9) hours and required an additional crew rest period!

Captain’s discretion is exactly that. It is the Captain and the captains alone to utilise in order to cover any ‘unforeseen circumstances’ after report.

It is also a requirement that the Captain, before he utilises discretion, must ensure the first officer and cabin crew are also free from fatigue and are safe to continue… at least that is what legislation states, however, the reality is somewhat different.

Any intimidation, or reprimand, by any airline  undermines these principles and compromises the safety of the public and the health and well-being of crew members.

So how do you protect yourself from such rogue operators?

‘THE REALITY’

The above is far from being a ‘one off”.

The experience of a UK airline captain working for a major British Airline confirms the intimidation of not only cabin crew but even senior pilots is commonplace.

The sad fact is, the vast majority of pilots and cabin crew, despite it being illegal, simply buckle due to airline management intimidation and agree to offer discretion to conceal an illegally planned flight duty period.

The book Pulling Wings From Butterflies details the fight with the entire aviation establishment when a Captain refused to utilise discretion to cover a Flight Duty that was falsified to make it appear it conformed with legislation.

For refusing to operate into discretion, the airline claimed this was a ‘refusual to comply with a resonable managment instruction’, and the Captain was, therefore, guilty of ‘gross misconduct’.

For refusing to agree to operate a duty that was fifty-seven minutes in breach of legislation, even before the duty began, the Captain was suspended for seven months and threatened with dismissal.

It would be expected that the union BALPA and the CAA would have backed the Captain. The reality, however, is significantly different.

Due to the contents of the first two books in the series, the union, regulator, and a number of high-ranking senior managers are now under police investigation.

PArt TWO - Tercio de banderillas

Will the pilot union BALPA and the regulator, the CAA, support a legal case of major significance to the safety of airline passengers and crew?

What’s the reason unions and regulators allow airlines to have  ‘Cash Cadet’ pilots with zero jet experience pay them to fly fare-paying passengers?

Why do pilots agree to fly when dangerously fatigued that directly places not only themselves but their passengers and crews in danger?

What was the answer from the Thomas Cook CEO to the question ‘did the company put profit before safety’ in relation to two children’s death in Corfu?

How will a pilot with zero legal experience confront a multimillion-pound multinational at trial?

part three - Tercio de MUERTE

Crews admit that they are knowingly flying duties in the full expectation they will suffer fatigue. They are committing these criminal acts due to the “Bullying” culture at one of the UK’s biggest airlines.

The CAA is provided with irrefutable proof that duty times are knowingly falsified to make it appear they conformed with strictly laid down maximum times and that pilots are flying at the equivalent effectiveness of a drunk driver. Their response? ‘Get over it.’ .
